A new wave of travelers will soon discover Central America's best-kept secret, thanks to the opening of Mukul (rooms from $550; Ctra. Tola-Las-Salinas km. 10, Rivas; 505/2563-7160;mukulresort.com) on Nicaragua's unspoiled Emerald Coast. Founded by business tycoon Carlos Pellas, the resort showcases the country's natural beauty and tranquility. Thirty-seven guest rooms overlook a spectacular swath of beach; David McLay Kidd (the mastermind behind Bandon Dunes) designed the 18-high golf course. Non-golfers can take surfing lessons, fish, scuba dive and hike nearby volcanoes. Declares Pellas of his native country, "Nicaragua is more beautiful than Costa Rica and deserves to be discovered."
